Tawny Owls 2025/26

Welcome to the Tawny Owl Class

Mrs Muldoon is our class teacher. Mrs Stewart is our senior teaching assistant.
Mrs Mackenzie will teach us on a Monday afternoon. 

We are a class of 19 year 2 children and we enjoy learning new things. 

Our PE days change over the year depending on the topic we are doing, please keep an eye out on newsletters, notices on front door, our Facebook page, our weekly overviews and emails sent from Mrs Clarke.
Our topics include Games, Dance, Karate, Yoga, Rugby. We are lucky to have outside agencies come to teach us PE as well as lessons from Mr. Hosker and Mrs Mackenzie. For Spring Term 2 our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday 
For Summer Term 1 our PE days are Tuesday and Friday 
Please remove all jewellery on these days and be dressed in PE kits. 

In Year 2 we do the following subjects over the year

Phonics - our phonics scheme is Bug Club
We have some Bug Phonics lessons to  revise and consolidate our understanding and we also have Support for Spelling lessons to learn all about the spelling rules. 

Handwriting - our handwriting links to Bug Club and in Year 2 we begin to work on cursive letters and joining our writing when we are ready

English - our English lessons are based around different books, in Year 2 this year our books are Molly McDrew Around the World, Room on the Broom, Where the Poppies Now Grow, Paddington's Post, Paddington's Christmas Post. 
Spaghetti, Spaghetti Poem, Handa's Surprise, Molly McDrew and the Great Fire of London, Different Poems on themes, Molly McDrew Space Adventures, Paddington at the Palace. 
Authors linked to these books are Naomi Joslyn, Michael Bond, Julia Donaldson, Hilary Robinson, Eileen Browne, Jack Prelutsky.

Maths -We use White Rose Maths as a base for our Mathematics lessons -   Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Shape, Money, Multiplication and Division, Length and Height, Mass, Capacity and Temperature, Statistics, Position and Direction, Problem Solving. We also do Mastering Number sessions each day, this helps with our Mathematical understanding and fluency. 

We use the KAPOW schemes for the following subjects 

Science - Habitats, Microhabitats, Uses of Everyday Materials, Life Cycles and Health, Plants  

DT - Baby Bear's Chair, Pouches, Moving Monsters plus a cooking topic 

Art - Drawing - Understanding tone and texture, Painting - Life in colour, Sculpture - 3D clay houses 

Music - Call and Response, Animals, Instruments, Musical Story Telling, Singing on this island, Contrasting Dynamics Space, Structure Myths and Legends, Pitch Musical Me 

Computing - What is a computer? Algorithims and De-bugging, Computer systems and word processing, Programming Make Code, Stop Motion, Data Handling 

RE - Why do we need to give thanks?, What do candles mean to people? Advent, Christmas, 
How do we know some people feel a special connection to God? What is a prophet, Easter .
How do some people talk to God? Where do some people talk to God?

RSE/PSCHE - Family and Relationships, Health and well-being, Safety and the changing body, Citizenship, Economic well-being, Transition. 

We also follow My Happy Mind and have weekly lessons and complete our journals. 

We all enjoy our end of day story time session too and have read some chapter books as well as picture books, if you want to bring a book into school to share with your friends please do, we would enjoy reading them together. 
 
We will also be doing lots of other exciting things in school.
